Summer Tips for Incoming PTA Leaders

Summer vacation is here! While these months can be filled with road trips to the beach, summer camps, long nights and lots of “R&R” time—summer is also an opportunity to plan a smooth transition into the upcoming school year. Just as teachers must plan the next school year’s curriculum, PTA leaders have an assignment of their own, too.

At the end of their term, outgoing leaders transfer their procedures books to the incoming leaders. Even if an outgoing leader thinks the information is of no value, with these books you will have a better idea of what was done in the past and how the PTA went about doing it. Outgoing leaders can also offer valuable insight on things yet to be done, what they would do better and suggestions on how to be more effective and efficient in the performance of your new duties. Take notes and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Start planning now for your own smooth transition into office. Here are a few tips for incoming local leaders to consider:

Share contact information with outgoing leaders and set up a directory to be and remain connected. With previous leaders’ contact information, you’ll be able to reach out for additional support throughout the year or to ask for insight as problems arise.

Review procedures books given to you from outgoing leaders. If there are none, do not worry; start one by getting and reading your local unit bylaws. The PTA unit’s secretary should have a copy. If you can’t find it, call the state office; they’ll be happy to mail or email you one.

Visit and review the sections that may apply to your new position.  If you don’t see your position listed, the information this website contains is of value to the entire PTA board.  Even if you’re an experienced PTA leader, it is worth reviewing every year as it is updated with the most current information and trends to help you and your unit to be successful.

Check out our state PTA’s websiteWe have information that can start you off on the right foot for the year. For example, templates, training opportunities, resources, program materials, newsletters, etc. You might find ways to connect with your state through Facebook, Instagram, Legislative Alerts, Twitter, etc.

Take advantage of the e-learning courses. National PTA offers online training courses to help you grow as a leader at Although you may want to start with what you’ll need for your own PTA position, please take all courses. As a board member, it’s important to know the role of each position and what to expect.

Meet with your school principal to learn about school goals and objectives for the incoming year. Share with the principal the programs the PTA would like to hold (Reflections, Family Reading Experience Powered by Kindle, Healthy Lifestyles, Fire Up Your Feet, Teacher Appreciation Week, Connect for Respect, etc.) and how these programs will support the goals and objectives of the school. Think about becoming a School of Excellence in the process!

Set up a communications plan. Newsletters and social media keep everyone informed, engaged and proud of what the PTA is doing. Go through your PTA’s goals, identify specific strategies your PTA or committee will use to achieve each goal and then create a step-by-step plan for each strategy. This is key to growing membership and gaining members and community support.

STEM + Families Science Festivals

Apply: June 22, 2018 – August 26, 2018

National PTA and Bayer have teamed up to promote Science Festivals with two unique grants available depending on your type of PTA. The 2018 – 2019 National PTA STEM + Families Science Grants sponsored by Bayer will award $1,000 to 30 local PTAs to host a STEM + Families Science Festival, and $3,000 to five State, District, Council or Region PTAs to partner with local PTAs in hosting Science Festivals. WAIT…It’s not too late! Georgia PTA is holding a Membership Sweep! We are challenging each local unit to see who can get the greatest percentage membership increase before summer break. This is a great way to close out your 2017 – 2018 school year and win some startup funds for your 2018 – 2019 Membership Drives.

$200.00 Awards will be given to units with the greatest percentage membership increase from March 1, 2018 to June 5, 2018. All membership dues must be received on or before June 5th by 5:00 pm at Georgia PTA to count. NO EXCEPTIONS

In order to be eligible to win an award your local unit must be in good standing. There is still time to get in the game and win if you’re not in good standing.

Remember to submit a completed Dues Transmittal form with $3.75 payment for each member postmarked no later June 5th, to Georgia PTA. Contest entries will not be complete without the form and payment. All PTA checks must have two (2) signatures. Drop offs are allowed.

Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award

National PTA is now accepting applications for the 2018 Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award. This award recognizes PTAs that best demonstrate outstanding achievement in the areas of diversity and inclusion, as well as efforts to end discriminatory practices.

Winners Will Receive:

  • Honored at the D&I Breakfast at the National PTA Convention

School Grants from Action for Healthy Kids—Made for You

OK, so you’re ready to make change happen at school! Despite wanting to do what’s best for students’ health, many schools lack the necessary resources to implement health and wellness practices that help students eat better and stay physically active. Our collaborative partner,  Action for Healthy Kids has provided $7.7 million in grants to schools since 2009 to help them accomplish their student wellness goals.

We are pleased to announce the offering of  Parents for Healthy Kids Grants for the 2018-2019 school year. These grants, which are sponsored by ALDI, are designed for parents or parent groups, including PTA|PTSA’s, to lead school-based physical activity and nutrition initiatives and to engage more parents in student and family health.

Grants up to $1,000 are available for K-12 schools in the following states: AL, AR, CA, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV. Schools with greater than 50% of students eligible for free/reduced-priced meals may receive priority, as well as schools located within 15 miles of an ALDI store, but all schools are encouraged to apply.

  2. Register for the grant webinar to learn about specific grant details and eligibility requirements and receive helpful tips for applying.
  3. We recommend you complete a paper application with your school health team prior to submitting your application online. Once the paper application is complete, it will take ~30 minutes to submit online. (No school health team? Learn how to start one or contact for support.)
  4. Log in or create an account on the Action for Healthy Kids school portal. Applications must be submitted online.
  5. Once there, connect your account with the school(s) for which you are applying. To do this, click on My Profile, then the Add or Manage Schools button.
  6. Click on Grants, and select the Parents for Healthy Kids grant. Then, complete your application!

Student scholarships for graduating high-school seniors help you achieve your dreams

Your education doesn’t end once you walk across that high-school graduation stage.

That’s why Georgia PTA has scholarships to help you achieve your college dreams and your life goals.   Georgia PTA Scholarships assist students who have successfully completed high school and who are interested in furthering their education in a college, university or post-secondary institution. Georgia PTA Scholarships, the first of which was established in 1963, are funded solely through memberships, local unit PTA, Council contributions and other donations. The number of awards and amounts of each scholarship vary year-to-year depending on the donations.

This scholarship recognizes graduating seniors for their volunteer service in schools and communities, allowing them to register for courses at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools. Applicants must be PTA members graduating from a Georgia high school between January 1 and June 30 of the current academic year.

Applications for the 2017-18 year are now open!

Applications, reference forms and all supporting documents must be received in the Georgia State PTA office by April 16th. All applicants are notified of their status in May.  Scholarship winners receive a letter of congratulations and recognition certificate from Georgia PTA along with a check.  For questions and more information, please contact the Youth Services Chair at


Don’t forget to include these items in your application:

  • Proof of your PTA membership
  • Descriptive essay (maximum two pages) outlining your proposed field of study and why you have chosen this career field.
  • Current high school transcript.
  • Your volunteer service in the community
  • Two completed reference forms and letters, written specifically for this application (first reference written by a community volunteer leader unrelated to you and with whom you volunteered; second reference written by a member of the high-school faculty).
  • When mailing a hard copy of your application packet, please do not fold the scholarship application or supporting documents.  Assemble packet in the following order: application, letters of recommendation, essay, transcript, and copy of membership cards..

All scholarships require current membership at PTAs in good standing, so if you’re not yet a member but are interested in applying for these opportunities, be sure to contact your local PTA and join today!

PTA DAY at the Capitol Registration Open!

The 2018 Georgia PTA Day at the Capitol will be held March 1, 2018. We invite all PTA members to celebrate our second century of advocacy by joining us at 9:00 a.m. at the Fulton County Government Center for a briefing on legislative issues and advocacy. Immediately following this session, we will head to the Capitol to see the legislature at work.

Invite your administrators, educators, superintendents, school board members, business partners and student leaders to attend. To ensure your seat, register early. Remember to WEAR RED!
