39th PTA Day at the Capitol

39th PTA Day at the Capitol

For over 100 years, the PTA has been the voice for those who were too young to speak for themselves and for those that were ignored.

After a thorough discussion with Tyler Barr about our 39th annual PTA Day at the Capitol celebration, we made a slight adjustment to the PTA Day program. The decision was made to mirror an action made by our PTA founders.  Our founders advocated for a strong public school system through the universal kindergarten program. They also fought off threats to our children by eliminating child labor laws. Their advocacy efforts helped to provide support to other PTA members who wanted to speak up with a powerful voice.

We are rallying the troops, both young and old, to come and stand with our State President Rita Erves as we dress in Red to Rally for the Legislative Hot Topics as deemed by you, the members of PTA and our Legislative Team.

However, before our march to the Capitol, we will hear a presentation on Common Core from Dr. Dana Rickman, Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education.  We are so excited about having our National PTA Legislative Chair, Stella Edwards, at this event to give us many helpful tips on how to advocate effectively.  This dynamic duo will provide the resources and training that will strengthen our powerful voice on behalf of “every child!”

PTA Day at the Capitol

The 2014 Georgia PTA Day at the Capitol will be held March 4, 2014.  We invite all PTA members to celebrate our second century of advocacy by joining us at 8:30 a.m. at the Fulton County Government Center for a briefing on legislative issues and advocacy.  Immediately following this session, we will head to the Capitol to see the legislature at work.

Invite your administrators, educators, superintendents, school board members, business partners and student leaders to attend.  To ensure your seat, register early.  Remember to WEAR RED!

The second highlight of the day will be lunch with the legislators at the Freight Depot beginning at 12:15 p.m.  Georgia PTA has invited all of the legislators to the luncheon, however, a personal invitation from you as a constituent and “local leader” in your community will be the most effective guarantee of their attendance. Go to Capitol Watch here to contact your legislator.

National PTA School of Excellence Program | Deadline Reminder December 6th

As you know, the deadline for schools enrolled in the School of Excellence Program was extended until Friday, December 6th.

While the National PTA strongly encourage schools to complete their Family-School Partnership Scans by Friday, December 6th,  the National PTA will not be shutting down the link for schools to complete their Family-School Partnership Scan until the end of the month for any school that may have experienced any technical difficulty with the enrollment process. If you know of any schools that will need this extra time to complete their family-school partnership scan, please notify Dr. Renee Jackson. We want to give schools ample time to complete this very important step on their road to excellence. Schools can access the School of Excellence portal at www.pta.org/excellencetools.

Thank you to many of you or other leaders who have reached out to schools enrolled in the program to encourage them to continue the next steps for completion.

Please remember to visit the state portal where you can receive updated information, milestones, and materials for the program www.pta.org/stateexcellencelibrary. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Erin Thwaites or myself, Dr. Renee Jackson at excellence@pta.org.
